Met Wendy Coe (coordinator) at the plot Sunday 2pm, started planting. Found some 1" sunflower volunteers all over, and an onion in the planned onion section. Some celery or other green got put in the Solanacae plot by accident. It's too early for the Solanaceas anyway. Put in the 9 fennel plants started indoors, plus some Brassicas, Dill and Echinacea started indoors, Comfrey from elsewhere in the Community Garden, Bee Balm from Sherburne, and potatoes that had sprouted from ones I grew in Grand Isle in 2006. Sowed seeds directly in the ground for everything else, some were old seeds (esp the flowers), back to 2002, and I don't know if they'll all sprout. June 1 Went back to the garden after a week away. Weeds grew very well in the rainy weather while I was gone, but so did the beans -- most are 3 inches high already, although one small section (one packet of leftover seeds, presumably) didn't sprout at all. I reseeded that with the small white "masai" beans from Mom. Planted sprouted safflower seeds on the western edge (bottom of the diagram), and N - a clump of chives dissected into 9 parts NE - some random sprouted greens/herbs E - a line of okra down the middle and one across the end SE - filled in the unsprouted beans, a few cukes started indoors S - just pinched off a few squash sprouts that were too close SW - heaped a bit of soil over the potato stems W - still waiting for the beets to sprout NW - fennel looks good, just weeded a bit June 8 Another few hours spent in the garden. Put out the rest of the warm-weather plants, got my two bales of straw mulch, mulched the paths and most of the beds. Leftover mulch is in the potato bed, waiting to be used. N - chives are doing well, don't see many carrots/parsnips NE - tiny greens/herbs E - okra not up, planted 4 big eggplants, 2 small and one pepper SE - new beans not up; filled in remaining spots for squash (1' spacing) S - these beans, squash are doing great, plus volunteer sunflowers SW - heaped more soil over the potato stems and some hay mulch W - STILL waiting for the beets to sprout NW - broccoli, fennel look good, stuck in the extra curcurbits
